Principal Data Scientist
13.5 month contract
Air Force employs a variety of AI approaches across computer vision, natural language processing, radio frequency signal processing, multi-modal fusion, process optimisation, data visualisation, human computer interfaces, decision support and robotic autonomous systems.
The Principal Data Scientist – Air Force will be required will work closely with Air Force, Department of Defence, Australian Government and other organisations to develop strategy frameworks, support AI capability initiatives and assist with advice on policy and legislation around the application of AI technologies in military contexts. The work will be primarily carried out in Defence Offices in Canberra with travel opportunities.

The Role
The role’s responsibilities will include:
Advice and guidance to develop and inform Air Force AI and data strategies.
Advice to Defence and Air Force Senior Executives in the areas of AI and AI adoption.
Advice and guidance for Air Force projects on AI, enabling technologies and supporting areas (talent acquisition, skills & education, AI governance, data management, responsible AI, AI adoption).
AI coordination, research and development support to Jericho Disruptive Innovation initiatives.
Dialogue with senior AI representatives around AI adoption and capability from the Department of Defence, Australian Government, overseas, as well as industry and academia.
Support the development of Air Force policy and legislation around the application of emerging AI approaches in military contexts.
Your Background & Experience
The assessment criteria is as follows:
Demonstrated experience designing, developing and/or contributing to enterprise or organisational AI and/or data strategies.
Demonstrated experience in leading or managing AI adoption and/or implementation of an AI strategy in an enterprise context in a company of over 100 full time equivalent personnel.
Principal or Chief Data Scientist experience including management of data science & engineering teams, coordination of AI projects as well as research and development.
Strong AI network across industry, academia and/or government.
Clear, concise and articulate oral and written communication skills, with the ability to influence, persuade and negotiate.
Experience in supporting the development of organisational policy and/or legislation around the impacts of Artificial Intelligence.
